I have worn a vintage Explorer more link than any other watch over the last four or five years. Its a watch I know forward and backward inside and out. But the 124273 made link me think about it in a new way. It got me thinking about what makes the Explorer so special what has allowed its relatively simple design to link endure for two-thirds of a century mostly unchanged. It even got me thinking about what it even means to Explore today.

While I love the original design and would have enjoyed seeing it here the rehaut for the Pelagos 39 does a good job in terms of legibility and to bridge the link depth between the dial and the crystal which is deeper link than you might expect for a watch that is less than 12mm thick. It’s deep enough to make the bezel look ever so slightly misaligned link in some photos. This was not my impression in person and admittedly I’ve been staring at these photos for many hours.
