Carbon fiber cases have, in the time I’ve been writing about watches, gone through an interesting evolution; they were once novelties, and then clichés, and now they’ve become just another material in the watchmaking design vocabulary, and like any other basic material, carbon fiber is more or less successful depending on what else is going on with the design.Opening its simple box, the Metric – here in its colorful “Retro Dial” iteration – is very close to what I expected from the original brand images. To recap for those that missed the original post, the Metric measures 36mm wide and 41.5mm lug to lug, and is just 10.75mm thick with a sapphire crystal, steel caseback, and 50 meters of water resistance. Oh, and it sells for $395 and can also be had in a steel-and-blue colorway.The winner at Pebble is a 540K Autobahn Kurier – Mercedes made two and this is the sole survivor. HODINKEE has just learned that Grand Seiko, and Seiko, will not be participating in the 2020 edition of the Baselworld trade show. Seiko has been a participant at BaAs we discussed on HODINKEE Radio, there’s something interesting to note about this Tudor and others at Only Watch before it. These watches have the potential to sell for nearly 1,000% over their estimates, as did the Black Bay One in 2015. While the completely stealthy aesthetic of the Ceramic One might not have such graceful looks as the Black Bay One, it does indeed have the potential to sell for well beyond its estimate.At this time, NASA had not selected a single watch to be worn on the Mercury flights and was not supplying watches to the astronauts.
