This Beta 21 is just something else. One of the reasons why I decided to write about this watch this week is that it’s just so unique, and it gives such a specific type of satisfaction on the wrist. When holding this watch in my hand, I can’t help but feel empowered. Then, when I fastened it on my wrist, it’s unlike anything else I’ve worn.I’ve found over fifty years that what you do, you buy the best example you can for the money you have. If you have to wait, that’s fine. Don’t go on eBay and say, this one’s fifty bucks but this one is only ten bucks, but it’s a little rough. Nine times out of ten, that means somebody made it – they scanned the dial off something, glued it on.But make no mistake, the 1500 is a big case, bigger than I would likely need, given my personal collection of 10 to 12 watches. Measuring 18.5 inches wide, 14.06 inches deep, and 6.93 inches thick, it’s the size of a large laptop bag and, as you’ll see below, can quickly be set up to hold 24 watches of various sizes. That said, if the 1500 is not the right size for you, Pelican makes around 50 other versions of the Protector case, so it’s likely that you can find a case that will work for you.There are, of course, always things you could wish for. The 222, for instance, doesn’t have an adjustable bracelet, but this is less an oversight than a deliberate design decision. Fifty meters’ water resistance is more than adequate for a watch of this type and in this class – yes, it’s nominally a sports watch, but it’s clearly not selling itself primarily on specs.I’ve spent far too much time looking through books on Cartier history in an effort to understand not only the brand but the design choices they made from the 1920s to the 1970s and most specifically their bracelets. While it’s not a bracelet with quick-adjust or anything we normally get excited about, a bracelet in the Privé collection for the first time is big news. I’d like to say I photographed the highlights from the collection, starting with No. 5, one of Breguet’s first self-winding pocket watches, and ending with No. 1176, one of his earliest tourbillon pocket watches, but nearly every single piece in the museum deserves that qualifier and what I have for you here is merely a sample of what’s on offer, including but not limited to a series of souscription and repeating pocket watches.This is a special one for René. His father used to wear this watch a lot and when he passed away in 2002 and the family was dividing up his personal watches, this is the one René wanted most. It’s a simple white gold Day-Date on a President bracelet, but it has tremendous sentimental value. His father’s close friend André Heiniger, the former President of Rolex, also had the same watch.My opinion would be to go with variations, with new dials. Maybe try a DLC coating and a black dial. How cool would that be?I hope that Zenith keeps going in the same orologi replica panerai direction. They’re doing a great job honoring people like myself, who know these watches were and are great.The crystal on each is edge-to-edge biosourced glass which is elevated allowing a view of the dial from all angles in a really fun way. Turning each watch over and there’s a little Easter egg serving as the battery cover with dial designs reminiscent of the Swatch watches of yesteryear.
