Bats Movie Synopsis
When people start dying in the small fictional town of Gallup in Texas, bats become the prime suspects. The CDC calls in chiropterologist, Dr. Sheila Casper, and her assistant, Jimmy Sands, to investigate the situation.
Dr. Alexander McCabe hides this fact, but admits that the bats have been genetically modified by him to be more intelligent and omnivorous, so they are no longer endangered. Sheila disagrees with this, but it seems that McCabe is acting with good intentions.
With the help of Sheriff Emmett Kimsey and CDC specialist Dr. Tobe Hodge, Sheila and Jimmy embark on a search for the bat nest. On the first night, they were attacked, but managed to catch one and put a tracking device on it. Unfortunately, when the bat is released, it is killed by another bat that understands the strategy. Emmett decided that Gallup needed to be evacuated, and the mayor was asked to give a warning to all citizens to stay indoors and secure their homes.
Unfortunately, no one listened. The bats attack the town, and within minutes, chaos ensues with several people dead, including Dr. Hodge who sacrificed himself to save Sheila.
The National Guard arrived and began evacuating the town. They give Sheila and her team of bat hunters 48 hours before they destroy the town in hopes of wiping out the bats. Sheila set up a command center at a local school. The military promised to concentrate Chromo-B340 satellite infrared cameras around Gallup to help locate the bat nests.
However, when the nest was found, Sheila was at a loss as to how to destroy the thousands of bats. Bombing the roost would disperse them, create new roosts, and spread the investment across the country. While poisons commonly used to control bats are only marginally effective against them, they are extremely harmful to humans. According to Sheila, a drop in temperature in the roost will make the bats hibernate rather than fly away, so they die from the cold.
Jimmy arranged for NGIC Industrial Temperature Control using freon, carbon dioxide, and oxygen to be lowered as soon as the roost was discovered, in the cave that Emmett recognized as an inactive mine. All plans were to start at 6am, but the government had other plans and didn’t want to wait until dawn. During the night, they set explosives in the mine to trap the bats inside and freeze them. Unfortunately, the bats killed all the soldiers there and then attacked the school. Sheila and the others use electric fences and blowtorches to drive the creatures away. But it is revealed that McCabe, who turns out to be insane, has created the bats to be the ultimate predator, designed specifically to kill humans. McCabe escapes outside, convinced that he can control the bats, only to be killed himself.
